Why check out the contractor with the C.S.L.B.?
(Contractors State License Board)
News Flash March 2010
In this day and age when the economy is at its lowest point, contractors will do anything like NOT paying licensing or insurance fees to save money.  We cannot stress how important it is to check out each company and make sure they are properly licensed and insured.  Contractors are required by California Contractors Law and Labor Laws to have Workers Compensation Insurance. A few contractors are telling homeowners they do not need Workers Compensation Insurance because they are using a family member to build your patio cover.  This is not permissable under Workers Compensation State Laws and should be reported to the Contractors State License Board.

Contractors are only allowed to collect how much for a deposit?
Warning: Consumers should be dilligent and know your rights against unlicensed and uninsured contractors.  Always make sure your Contractor  has the proper insurance before they start work.
Contractors are only allowed to collect 10% or $1,000 whichever is less as a deposit on any construction agreement/contract.  We recommend you never pay a contractor unless you have received all the material or labor services in advance of making any payments.  It is very tempting for contractors not to perform once they receive your money in this economy.  Therefore, get the goods first and give the money last.
