Step 2: Measure the Width (Projection)

Place your tape measure on the right side and against the house wall, measure straight out to a point on your concrete or wood deck you would like the patio cover POST to be placed.  Now, repeat the same steps for the left side.  Newport Patio Covers, Lattice Patio Covers and Lattice Patio Covers have a 1 - 2 foot overhang past the the post and header beam. You should add the overhang to measurement of the post and beam location.  For instance if you measured from the house wall out and wanted the post to be 10' 0" from the hosue wall and wanted a 2' 0" overhang.  Then your patio cover projection would be 12' 0" by as long as you want it to be.
(Traditional or Classic Patio Covers do not have overhangs, the patio cover and post placment end at the same measurement)

Step 1:  Measure the Height

Place your tape measure on the concrete slab or wood deck and measure to top of your eave  then add 12" (in).  The maximum height for our patio covers is 12' 0" at the highest point.

General Notes:  Our Patio Covers are installed with a 1/2" slope for every 12" of width, for example a patio cover with a 10'0" width (projection) will have a 5" drop for water drainage. Laguna Lattice Patio Covers do not have slope and are installed level.

Step 3: Length

Place your tape measure at the approximate location of where your patio cover will start.  Measure from one end to the other.  You do not have to add for any overhang.  Your patio cover will be made to the size you want.

Submit Photos:  take pictures of your patio area send them to us (click here to upload photos) or click the Camera.  We can advise you on what would be the best application for you (i.e. roof mount, eave mount or wall mount)

Step 4: How Many Posts?

The distance between posts depends on the distance the patio cover will span from the eave to the front beam.  We have listed some of the standard O.C. (On Center) dimensions based on the projection and attaching to an existing concrete patio slab.  The minimum requirement for a concrete slab is 4".  In most cases all concrete patios are installed with a minimum thickness of 4".

Standard O.C. (On Center) Post Spacing

What is the tributary?

The tributary distance is 1/2 of the clear span plus the over hang.  Foreinstance if the distance to the beam is 12' 0" and the overhang is 1' 0".  the tributary would be 7' 0"

Clear Span 12' 0" X .5 =  6' 0" + 1' 0" = 7' 0"

The distance between posts depends on the distance the patio cover will span from the house to the beam.  This dimension is called the "Clear Span".  The minimum requirement for a concrete slab is 4".  In most cases all concrete patios are installed with a minimum thickness of 4".
